Nocturnal Blossom

Firstly, thank you for agreeing to do this interview for Silver Star! If you'll start by telling us who you are. Real name or online alias is fine. :]
Nocturnal Blossom

1. How long would you say you've been cosplaying, at a guess?
Since 2006.

2. What was it that made you interested in cosplay? Was it an outside influence, like friends? Or a natural course that occoured as you grew up?
I became interested in cosplay almost at the same time as I started reading manga. My first manga was Death Note, and I remember searching for coloured poster images of it, coming across cosplayers on Google, and thinking ‘this is amazing!’ One of my friends mentioned the London Expo and that people attended in costume, and the rest, as they say, is history!

3. What do you find you cosplay from mostly? Games? Anime? Manga? Disney? Do you crossplay? If so, who?
I think I mostly cosplay from anime and manga, although I have a couple of game costumes. I like manga and artbook versions of costumes as they tend to be prettier and more detailed than anime. I have done some movie/television costumes too, and I especially like those – it’s good to see ‘real life’ versions rather than relying on reference pictures.

4. What are your favourite costumes to do? Colourful ones? Really complicated ones? And why?
I like unusual costumes, that people won’t necessarily recognise – part of a perverse desire to be different, and also because it’s so much more gratifying when people DO recognise you! Even if I cosplay a well-known character, I like, wherever possible, to make a less-seen outfit and to do it as well as I can.

5. Do you like to cosplay alone, or like to be involved in groups? Or both?
I think being involved in groups makes the whole experience more enjoyable, especially when you’re doing something with friends – you really feel part of something, and getting into character is more comfortable if you know the other people in the group!

6. Do you have any dream cosplays or groups you'd like to do?
I’d love to do something with a really, really, really big dress – perhaps Rue’s wedding dress from Princess Tutu or something equally romantic and pretty! What can I say, I’m a princess at heart..! I’d love to one day be involved in a really big Code Geass group. Or a COMPLETE Princess Tutu group. But I think I’d be happy being in any big cosplay group with friends!

7. What would you say was the best thing about cosplaying, personally? And what would be your best experience to date?
One of the nicest things about cosplaying is wearing a costume which somebody else wants to see – it’s immensely gratifying when people are happy to see something they might not have necessarily expected! I also really enjoy doing it with my friends. I think my best experience in cosplay was taking part in the Kuroshitsuji circus group with my friends at Ayacon and over the summer. It was so amazing to do something with all of us, and everyone suited their parts so well! Plus we had an amazing post-con summer shoot which is such a happy memory! All my experiences with the lovely Trinity Albion group have been really great too.

8. I know most people hate to do this, but out of the cosplays you've done, which ... three, say, are your favourites and why?
The twins from Gormenghast – without a doubt the most epic costume ever. The whole process was fun, from conceiving the crazy idea to glue-ing all the bodice bits to hand-making the jewellery to limping about talking in flat voices and being silly with Monkey all day!

Rue’s black and red tutu from Princess Tutu – I love Princess Tutu, and was really happy with how this turned out – really simple, but incredibly comfortable and I think the colours and lines look good in the photos. Also, I have red pointe shoes – what more could I want?!

Battle waitress Mikuru from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – one of my earlier costumes, but I think the first which I actually looked nice in! I like it – it’s really cute and pink and fun to run around in.

9. For anyone looking to enter into the cosplay scene, what advice would you give?
Get a glue gun and an extremely flexible sense of humour.

Thank you very much for your time! Do you have anything else to add? :]
...anyone want to create a complete Princess Tutu group with me? XD <3
